New York Giants president, CEO, and co-owner John Mara has shared that he is battling cancer. The 70-year-old executive made the announcement Monday in a public statement, expressing confidence and determination as he begins treatment.

“I have recently been diagnosed with cancer and have been following the treatment plan recommended by an outstanding team of doctors,” Mara said. “I’m feeling strong and optimistic, and I’m committed to seeing this through to a positive outcome. I plan to remain active with the team throughout my treatment, and I’m fortunate to be surrounded by incredible support—personally, professionally, and medically.”

He also asked for privacy for himself and his family while he undergoes care.

Mara’s ties to the Giants run deep. He joined the organization in 1991 as general counsel before moving into the roles of executive vice president and chief operating officer. After the death of his father, Wellington Mara, in 2005, John stepped into his current leadership role, sharing ownership responsibilities with Steve Tisch. Under their watch, the Giants captured two Super Bowl titles.

The Mara family has been synonymous with the Giants for nearly a century. John’s grandfather, Tim Mara, founded the team in 1925. After Tim’s passing in 1959, Wellington and Jack Mara carried the legacy forward. Today, John continues that tradition as a third-generation owner and one of the NFL’s most influential figures.

Although he chose not to share details about his diagnosis, Mara made it clear that his commitment to the Giants remains unchanged. His message to fans reflected both resilience and hope as he faces the fight ahead.
