Madonna has opened up about a deeply personal chapter in her life—her reconciliation with her younger brother, Christopher Ciccone, shortly before his death. In a recent conversation on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, the music icon revealed how a near-death experience changed her perspective and pushed her to mend their long-broken bond.

Back in June 2023, Madonna was rushed to the hospital with a severe bacterial infection that left her in a medically induced coma for several days. During that time, she says she had a powerful vision of her late mother. “I was almost on the other side, and my mother appeared to me. She asked, ‘Do you want to come with me?’ and I said, ‘No,’” Madonna recalled. That moment, she explained, made her realize she still had unfinished business and that forgiveness was something she could no longer avoid.

A few months later, Christopher, whose health had begun to decline, reached out to her. Their relationship had been fractured for years, especially after the release of his 2008 tell-all book Life With My Sister Madonna, which caused a deep rift between them.

For Madonna, the decision to see him again wasn’t easy. “It felt like forgiving an enemy,” she admitted. But she eventually chose to go, sat by his side, and held his hand. “It was such a relief, like a huge weight had been lifted,” she said. Christopher passed away in October 2024 at the age of 63.

The experience not only brought her peace but also inspired her creatively. Madonna revealed that she wrote two unreleased songs, Fragile and Forgive Yourself, both dealing with themes of healing, letting go, and self-accountability. “We have to forgive others, but we also need to forgive ourselves,” she said.

Looking back, Madonna sees forgiveness as one of life’s most important lessons. “The hardest people to forgive are usually the ones closest to us,” she reflected. “But in the end, it’s worth it.”
