The sands of time are shifting once again — The Mummy franchise is officially rising from its tomb.
Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, the beloved stars of the original late-‘90s adventure films, are reportedly returning for a brand-new Mummy sequel from Universal Pictures. The movie will be directed by the acclaimed filmmaking team Radio Silence, best known for Ready or Not and the recent Scream revivals.
Not a Reboot, but a True Sequel
According to early details, this new Mummy project won’t be a reboot but rather a continuation of the original saga — one that ignores the events of 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. The screenplay is written by David Coggeshall (Orphan: First Kill), and longtime Mummy producer Sean Daniel is back on board alongside William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment.
A Return to Adventure
Fraser, who won an Oscar in 2023 for his moving performance in The Whale, has been enjoying a major Hollywood comeback. Meanwhile, Weisz, who recently headlined Amazon’s Dead Ringers and appeared in Marvel’s Black Widow, remains one of the industry’s most versatile talents.
Their reunion marks a thrilling moment for fans of the original films, which blended classic horror, swashbuckling action, and irresistible chemistry between the leads.
Radio Silence Takes the Helm
Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (collectively known as Radio Silence) have proven they can mix tension, humor, and heart — the perfect recipe for a Mummy revival. Universal, which previously worked with the duo on the vampire horror Abigail, is betting that their modern horror-adventure style will breathe fresh life into the franchise.
What’s Next
Details about plot and additional cast members are still under wraps, but the project is expected to begin production soon.
For fans who’ve long hoped to see Rick O’Connell and Evelyn Carnahan back on the big screen, the wait may finally be over — The Mummy is ready to rise again.
