Jennifer Lawrence Admits Filming With Jonah Hill Was “Really, Really Hard” — and Not for the Reason You’d Expect

Jennifer Lawrence has worked alongside some of the biggest names in Hollywood, from Bradley Cooper and Liam Hemsworth to Leonardo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep. So when she revealed that one co-star made filming particularly difficult, many assumed it must have involved on-set tension or creative clashes.
In reality, it was the complete opposite.
The actor who gave Lawrence the most trouble was Jonah Hill — not because he was difficult to work with, but because he kept making her laugh.
The two appeared together in Netflix’s 2021 satire Don’t Look Up, a star-studded film that also featured DiCaprio, Streep, Cate Blanchett and Timothée Chalamet. Hill played Jason Orlean, the blunt and often outrageous White House Chief of Staff, while Lawrence took on the role of Kate Dibiasky, a no-nonsense astronomer trying to warn the world of an impending disaster.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Lawrence admitted that staying in character during scenes with Hill was a constant struggle.
“It was really, really hard filming with Jonah and not ruining take after take by laughing,” she said. “At one point, we actually spent a whole day just letting him improvise insults at me. It was amazing.”
Lawrence didn’t hold back when praising Hill’s talent, describing him as a master of improv and noting that very few actors can pull it off as naturally. She even recalled moments on set when Hill delivered lines so sharp she had to point out they weren’t in the script.
Despite all the laughter behind the scenes, Lawrence emphasized that Don’t Look Up isn’t just a comedy. Beneath the humour, the film delivers a pointed message about how science and truth often get lost amid politics, personal bias and media noise.
When asked what she hoped audiences would take away from the movie, Lawrence said she wanted people to think differently about how information is processed — and to focus more on protecting the planet and one another.
In the end, Jonah Hill may have made filming “really hard” for Jennifer Lawrence, but it was clearly the kind of challenge any actor would happily take: one driven by chemistry, talent and nonstop laughter, not conflict.
