Olivia Rodrigo Celebrates 5 Years of ‘Drivers License’ with a Collaboration with David Byrne

Olivia Rodrigo is celebrating a major milestone in her career: the fifth anniversary of her breakout single, ‘Drivers License.’ The song that transformed her from a Disney star to a global pop sensation is set to be part of a special celebration—and it’s kicking off with a legendary collaboration. Rodrigo has teamed up with Talking Heads frontman David Byrne for a stunning new cover of the emotional ballad.
The new version of ‘Drivers License’ is now available for streaming, offering a fresh take on the song that once dominated both the charts and listeners’ hearts. A limited edition 7-inch vinyl single will be released on April 3rd, featuring Byrne’s cover alongside a joint performance of the Talking Heads classic ‘Burning Down the House,’ recorded live at Governors Ball in 2025. Fans may recall the electric moment when Byrne surprised audiences by joining Rodrigo on stage last year.
Rodrigo couldn’t contain her excitement about the collaboration. Referring to Byrne as “one of my all-time heroes,” she revealed that she was deeply moved when she first heard his version of the song. “David is nothing short of a legend,” she wrote, adding that his interpretation brought her to tears. This release is just the beginning of a series of special covers to commemorate the anniversary of her debut album, ‘Sour,’ in June.
The singer had already hinted at something special earlier this week, posting a playful “license renewal” tease on her website—a clear nod to the song that launched her career in January 2021. At just 17 years old, Rodrigo became the youngest artist to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and ‘Drivers License’ quickly became a cultural phenomenon.  While this anniversary is an occasion to look back at where it all began, Rodrigo is clearly looking to the future. Throughout the past year, she has hinted that 2026 will bring a new creative chapter for her. In a previous interview, she revealed that she is “dreaming up something new,” suggesting that a sequel to ‘GUTS’ might be in the works.
For now, fans can enjoy this nostalgic-yet-bold new version of ‘drivers license’—a reminder of how far Rodrigo has come and how exciting her future is going to be.
