Brett James, Grammy-Winning Songwriter of “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” Dies in North Carolina Plane Crash

Grammy Award-winning songwriter Brett James, whose music shaped the sound of modern country, has died at the age of 57 following a tragic plane crash in North Carolina.

Authorities confirmed that a small aircraft registered in James’ name went down on Thursday afternoon near Franklin, North Carolina, roughly 270 miles from Nashville. The plane, which had departed from John C. Tune Airport in Nashville, crashed in a field close to Iotla Valley Elementary School around 3 p.m. Fortunately, no students or staff were harmed, according to a statement from the Macon County Sheriff’s Office.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that three individuals were on board at the time of the accident. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.

Brett James was a towering figure in country music, celebrated for penning Carrie Underwood’s career-defining hit “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” which earned him a Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 2006.
