Vince Zampella, a highly respected figure in the video game industry and co-founder of Respawn Entertainment, has passed away at the age of 55 after a fatal car accident in Southern California.
NBC Los Angeles reported that the crash took place on Sunday, December 21, along the Angeles Crest Highway. One individual was pronounced dead at the scene, while another later succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. Authorities have not officially confirmed which of the victims was Zampella.
Zampella leaves behind an extraordinary legacy in gaming. He co-founded Respawn Entertainment in 2010 with Jason West, building the studio into a powerhouse known for acclaimed titles such as Titanfall, Titanfall 2, Apex Legends, and the Star Wars Jedi series. Before launching Respawn, Zampella was a driving force at Infinity Ward, where he helped shape the groundbreaking Call of Duty: Modern Warfare franchise.
Following Electronic Arts’ acquisition of Respawn in 2017, Zampella remained at the helm as CEO. In 2021, EA entrusted him with leadership of the Battlefield franchise during a critical period of change. His guidance proved pivotal, helping restore confidence in the series as Battlefield 6 earned strong praise after the disappointing reception of Battlefield 2042.
Zampella’s death is a profound loss for the gaming community. His creativity, leadership, and influence helped define modern shooters and left a lasting mark on some of the industry’s most beloved franchises.
