GM Daniel Naroditsky Dies at 29

Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky, one of the most respected figures in American chess, has passed away at the age of 29, according to a statement from the Charlotte Chess Center.

“Daniel was a gifted player, commentator, and teacher — loved and admired by fans and players around the world,” the center said in a message shared on behalf of his family. They also asked for privacy as they grieve this difficult loss.

Naroditsky was known not only for his incredible skill but also for his calm, thoughtful presence both on and off the board. He began making headlines early in life, winning the 2007 World Youth Championship (Under-12) and publishing his first book, Mastering Positional Chess, at just 14 years old.

In 2013, he became the U.S. Junior Champion and later competed in five U.S. Championships, earning widespread respect for his strategic brilliance and professionalism. From 2014 to 2020, he also wrote a regular column for Chess Life magazine, sharing insights that helped many young players improve their game.

In recent years, Naroditsky became a beloved chess streamer and educator, reaching a global audience through online platforms. He was often praised for his clear explanations and kind approach, inspiring thousands to take up or return to chess.

Fellow Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura paid tribute during a livestream, saying, “He loved streaming and teaching. The chess world is so grateful for everything he did.” GM Oleksandr Bortnyk also remembered him as “a kind person and a good friend.”

Though his life was tragically short, Daniel Naroditsky leaves behind a legacy of talent, humility, and passion for the game. His contributions as a player, writer, and teacher will continue to inspire chess lovers around the world.
