Greer Grammer, the daughter of actor Kelsey Grammer, recently spoke candidly about a deeply emotional moment from her past that still affects her today. After revealing that she was estranged from her father for 11 years, Greer shared what she described as the “meanest thing” he ever said about her.
In a recent podcast appearance, Greer explained that her relationship with her father was cut off when she was very young and didn’t reconnect until she was 16. Their reunion happened unexpectedly at a Christmas tree lot, where Kelsey approached her and asked if she was Greer. She immediately recognized him, making the moment both awkward and emotional.
Although Greer says their relationship has since improved, she admitted that the long separation left emotional scars. She shared that therapy has helped her process the absence of her father during her childhood, though some memories still feel blocked, possibly as a way to protect herself.
During the same conversation, Greer revealed a painful comment Kelsey once made to her mother, Barrie Buckner, years earlier. According to Greer, her father told her mother that it might be better for Greer not to have his last name since he wouldn’t be involved in her life. Greer said she learned about this comment when she was around 19 years old.
Hearing those words was devastating for her. She recalled breaking down in tears, explaining that the idea of being emotionally abandoned and then symbolically separated by name felt incredibly hurtful. To her, it reflected a decision to step away completely, not just as a parent but as part of her identity.
While Greer acknowledged that her father may have believed he was making a practical suggestion at the time, the emotional impact was undeniable. Despite everything, she chose to keep his last name, explaining that it was the name she had always known and one tied to her early life.
Greer’s openness sheds light on the long-lasting effects of family estrangement and the complex emotions that can remain even after relationships begin to heal.
