James Mangold Signs Major Paramount Deal—What It Means for His Star Wars and Swamp Thing Projects

James Mangold Signs Major Paramount Deal

Acclaimed filmmaker James Mangold, best known for Logan and Ford v. Ferrari, has officially signed an overall deal with Paramount Pictures, sparking both excitement and concern among fans of his upcoming Star Wars and Swamp Thing films.

James Mangold Joins Paramount With High Side

According to Deadline, Mangold’s partnership with Paramount begins with High Side, a new project starring Timothée Chalamet. The film, based on Jaime Oliveira’s unpublished short story, follows a former MotoGP racer. Produced by Peter Chernin and David Ready alongside Mangold’s Turnpike Films, High Side was secured by Paramount after a heated bidding war, making it one of the studio’s biggest recent wins.

Paramount Co-Chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg praised the director in a joint statement:

> “James Mangold is one of the most talented filmmakers working today, and we could not be more excited to welcome him to the Paramount family, starting with High Side and many more collaborations to come.”

Mangold echoed their enthusiasm, saying:

> “The passion Paramount has shown toward big-screen storytelling and their excitement for my ideas is truly thrilling. I’m eager to begin this new chapter of collaboration.”

What About Star Wars?

Mangold was announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023 as the director of a new film set 25,000 years before the Skywalker saga, exploring the origins of the Jedi. In an interview earlier this year, he described the project as a “mythic epic” inspired by stories that fascinated him as a teenager.

However, Lucasfilm has remained quiet since the announcement, with no production timeline revealed. Now, with Mangold committing to multiple films at Paramount, fans are questioning whether his Star Wars project may face delays.

Swamp Thing Still Waiting on a Script

On the DC side, Mangold was tapped by James Gunn to bring Swamp Thing into the newly launched DC Universe. While Gunn confirmed in July 2025 that Mangold was still attached, he also revealed the director hadn’t yet delivered a script—further fueling speculation that Paramount’s deal could push the project back even more.

Mangold’s Growing Legacy in Hollywood

Over his career, Mangold has built one of the most versatile filmographies in modern Hollywood, directing hits across drama, westerns, thrillers, superhero blockbusters, and biopics. His credits include Walk the Line (Oscar win for Reese Witherspoon), 3:10 to Yuma, Girl, Interrupted, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

The five-time Oscar nominee has worked with some of Hollywood’s greatest talents, from Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale to Joaquin Phoenix and Matt Damon. With Paramount now locking him into an overall deal, the studio is betting big on his proven ability to deliver both prestige and box office success.

The Big Question: Priorities and Delays

While Mangold’s Paramount partnership is a major career milestone, it leaves his other projects in limbo. Both Lucasfilm and DC Studios have ambitious timelines, but without concrete scripts or start dates, fans may be waiting years to see his take on the Jedi origin story or the dark world of Swamp Thing.

For now, Paramount seems to be his top priority—meaning Star Wars and Swamp Thing might have to wait.
