Jim Carrey Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award at 2026 César Awards

Comedy icon Jim Carrey brought a touch of nostalgia, nostalgia and heartfelt emotion to the 51st César Awards in France, where he received one of the country’s highest cinematic honors – the honorary Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Canadian-American star is celebrated for his decades-long career that spans slapstick comedies, cult classics and critically acclaimed dramas. Accepting the prestigious César d’honneur, Carrey surprised the audience with his speech in full French, jokingly asking, “How was my French? Almost mediocre, right?” His self-deprecating humor drew laughter and a standing ovation from the crowd.

Carrey spoke about his artistic journey, comparing acting to clay sculpting and expressing gratitude to the filmmakers and audiences who embraced his work.  He also shared a personal connection to France, revealing that one of his ancestors, Marc-François Carré, was born in Saint-Malo nearly 300 years ago before immigrating to Canada. “Tonight, with this extraordinary honor, this square (Carré) comes full circle,” he said, cleverly referencing his surname.

The tribute included a special appearance by director Michel Gondry, who directed Carré in the acclaimed romantic drama “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” The show’s opening sketch also paid homage to one of Carré’s most beloved characters in “The Mask.”

Carré first rose to fame in the 1990s with hit comedies like “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” and “Dumb and Dumber,” redefining physical comedy for a new generation.  But he later proved his dramatic range with a powerful performance in “The Truman Show,” which earned him Golden Globes and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” His versatile talents have cemented his place as one of Hollywood’s most distinctive performers.

In recent years, Carrey has stepped back from the spotlight, making the Caesar tribute all the more meaningful. Attending the ceremony with his daughter Jane, grandson Jackson and partner Mina, he concluded his speech with a heartfelt thank you to his family — and a touching tribute to his late father, whom he called “the funniest man I’ve ever met.”

For France’s top film institution, honoring Carrey was not just a celebration of laughter, but a celebration of an artist whose career has balanced comedy and depth with rare authenticity.
