Former footballer Joey Barton has received a suspended prison sentence after being found guilty of posting grossly offensive content about broadcaster Jeremy Vine and football pundits Lucy Ward and Eni Aluko.
A court in Liverpool ruled that Barton crossed the line between free speech and criminal behaviour after sharing insulting posts on X (formerly Twitter) in early 2024. The court found that some of his posts were designed to humiliate and cause distress, particularly an image he shared comparing the pundits to notorious criminals.
Barton was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for 18 months. He was also ordered to complete 200 hours of community service and pay significant legal costs. In addition, the court issued restraining orders preventing him from mentioning the victims on social media or in broadcasts for two years.
The judge said that while harsh opinions can be part of free speech, targeted and harmful online abuse goes too far and cannot be protected by law.
