Kessler Twins: Legendary Entertainment Duo Die Together at 89

The entertainment world is mourning the loss of the Kessler twins, Alice and Ellen, the iconic German duo who charmed audiences for decades. The sisters, both 89, chose to end their lives together through assisted suicide, according to the German Society for Humane Dying (DGHS).

The DGHS confirmed that the twins had reached out more than a year ago, becoming members so they could legally and carefully plan their final decision. The organization said their wish was thoughtful, deeply considered, and made without any psychiatric crisis.

A spokesperson noted that the “decisive factor” for Alice and Ellen was their lifelong desire to leave the world together — just as they had lived.

A Bond That Defined Their Lives

The Kessler twins first rose to fame in the 1950s, dazzling audiences with synchronized performances, singing, and dance. Their elegance, identical appearance, and natural stage chemistry quickly made them European entertainment icons.

Even after the classic showgirl era faded, the pair continued to appear on German television and stayed active in theater. From 2015 to 2016, they even returned to the stage for a musical that toured major cities like Berlin, Munich, and Vienna.

Their personal bond was as strong as their artistic partnership. The sisters lived in two connected apartments in Munich and met every day for lunch. In interviews, they openly shared their wish never to be separated — in life or death.

They once told Corriere della Sera:
“The idea that one of us might go first is very hard to bear.”

A Planned Farewell

Assisted dying is legally allowed in Germany under specific conditions, following a 2020 court ruling. Local police confirmed they were present in the twins’ neighborhood of Gruenwald around the time of the planned procedure but did not comment further.

Before their passing, the sisters expressed their wish to have their ashes placed together in one urn, alongside their mother and beloved dog.

A Global Legacy

Born in what is now part of the town of Grimma in Saxony, the Kessler twins became global figures, representing a golden era of European variety entertainment. Grimma’s mayor said the town “mourns the loss of these two world-renowned personalities.”

Their careers, their connection, and their graceful departure reflect a rare lifelong partnership — one that captivated generations.
