UCF Assistant Coach and Former Appalachian State Head Coach Shawn Clark Dies at 50

Orlando, Fla. — September 22, 2025 — UCF offensive line coach and former Appalachian State head coach Shawn Clark has died at the age of 50, the university announced Monday.

Clark, a respected figure in college football, passed away on Sunday following a medical emergency earlier this month. According to UCF, he was initially listed in stable condition after the emergency on September 9 but died unexpectedly at a local hospital with his wife, Jonelle, by his side. No official cause of death has been released.

UCF and College Football Community Mourn Clark’s Loss

UCF head coach Scott Frost shared an emotional statement on behalf of the Knights:

“Shawn was so much more than a coach. He was a remarkable man, husband, and father who cared deeply about his players and staff. The reaction of our players and coaches to the news this morning is a testament to Shawn’s character and the impact he had on every life he touched. He was loved.”

UCF Athletics Director Terry Mohajir echoed those sentiments, praising Clark’s leadership and values:

“He brought passion, integrity, and a genuine love for people to everything he did. Shawn will be remembered not only for his impact on the game of football, but also for the relationships he built and the example he set as a husband and father.”

Shawn Clark’s Coaching Journey

Clark’s coaching career spanned more than two decades. He joined UCF’s coaching staff in December 2024 as offensive line coach, bringing experience and a reputation as a strong recruiter and developer of talent.

Before arriving in Orlando, Clark served as head coach at Appalachian State from 2020 to 2024, compiling a 40–24 record over five seasons. During his tenure, the Mountaineers consistently competed at a high level in the Sun Belt Conference.

His earlier coaching stops included roles at:

  • Louisville
  • Eastern Kentucky
  • Purdue
  • Kent State

As a player, Clark was a standout offensive lineman at Appalachian State, helping to lay the foundation for his future career in coaching.

Family and Legacy

Clark is survived by his wife, Jonelle, and their two children, Giana and Braxton.
