How Was Dennis Rader Caught?

After years of silence, he began reaching out again in 2004, sending cryptic letters and packages to police and local news stations. One of those packages included a floppy disk, which he assumed couldn’t be traced. That assumption proved fatal.
Investigators discovered hidden data on the disk that led them to a computer at Christ Lutheran Church in Park City—where Rader happened to be a church leader. The disk’s metadata even revealed the username “Dennis.”
Police then obtained a DNA sample from his daughter’s medical records, which matched evidence from several BTK crime scenes. That match was enough to confirm what investigators had long suspected.
Rader was arrested on February 25, 2005, and within days confessed in gruesome detail to all ten murders.
